Week Eight

Week Eight

The North was as picturesque as ever. Having to wear two layers sweaters and tuck my joggers into my wool socks was a bit of a shocker however. July is being a little shy this year don’t you think?

By Thursday I was back in the studio. Had the week to sit with the added work we did on Astrocops. Was not too fussy on any of it. So, Thursday night we recorded a wall of harmonies (one of my favourite musical things to do!) and when I hear it back, it makes me laugh out loud. I am not sure if this reaction (that Dave shares as well) is a good thing or a bad thing. You see, when I hear things I love, I laugh every time. But this impulse is not so clear when it is my own stuff. Some of you will probably love it, while the rest of you will want to whack me with a pool noodle or a Nurf bat (this particular weapon is one that a certain special someone threatens me with a bit too often). On Friday I spent the better part of the afternoon workin out Flow n Flow. On Thursday I was practicing and this entire new approach for this song came to me. I am so exited about the changes. Finally, I am hearing it the way it wants to be heard. Up until recently there has been a back and forth debate (between My Self and Myself) about how to use my higher range (called “head voice”). My voice has a naturally high timbre, so when I sing in head voice, I sometimes feel that it makes people feel uncomfortable/annoyed. This may be because I love male mid-tones and female voices with a deep, warm timbre (like Nina Simone and PJ Harvey). Also, my ears do not respond well to high frequencies. The melody in the chorus (in Flow n Flow) is pretty high and smooth, but the verses are deeper and rougher. This dichotomy hasn’t sat well since I wrote the tune, but no solution would come. While I was practicing on Thursday I felt inspired to try the tune on piano… and I finally heard what was supposed to be going on in the chorus. WoooHooo! Tomorrow (Monday) I am assuming we will flesh out these ideas some more.

I am starting to nod off, so nite! And remember I am doing ONE entry per week, instead of individual entries on certain days.

Check back: SUNDAY JULY 26th
